Milton Keynes’ Concrete Cows represent an iconic work of sculpture, created in 1978 by the American artist Liz Leyh. The cows were constructed from scrap, skinned with fibre glass reinforced concrete. The originals are in MK Museum. The ones shown here (in Bancroft) are replicas made by Bill Billings.
Over the years this small herd has been vandalised and modified. The poor creatures have been painted pink, become zebras, become skeletal, had pyjama bottoms added, acquired BSE graffiti (mad cow disease), and been beheaded. One of the calves was once kidnapped with a ransom note appearing in the local papers, and one of the cows briefly enjoyed the services of a papier-mâché bull.
The home supporters stand at Milton Keynes Dons F.C. is known as ‘The Cowshed’. The team mascots are two pantomime-style cows named ‘Donny’ and ‘Mooie’.
